Eucomis ‘Bicolor’ (Pineapple Lily)

Add a bit of garden whimsy with this (AHS) award winning pineapple lily. Attractive low growing wavy leaves emerge in spring followed by racemes of lime-green, star-shaped flowers edged in purple. Has a decidedly tropical feel and to me seems very Dr. Seussy. Most sources recommend full sun exposure… they are certainly happy there, but I’ve been growing mine in part-shade for years with good success. If you care to experiment, it can be a surprising addition to a shady garden. Emergence and flowering can be a bit delayed in lower light situations. The nectar rich flowers attract pollinators. Hardy in Zones 7-10, but also makes a unique container plant that can be brought into a garage or protected area during winter in cold climates. Bulbs can also be lifted, stored and replanted in spring. Ht with flower 18”. Perennial bulb.
