Sedum makinoi Limelight (Stonecrop)

This sedum is a delightful addition to a part SHADE garden. While we usually think of sedums as full sun plants, makinoi Limelight can grow happily in sun or shade, opening up a world of design choices. Rounded chartreuse leaves whirl around red stems forming a spreading fleshy groundcover with teeny yellow flowers in summer. Offers a little splash of light spilling from a wall, or between stepping stones. Happiest in part- light shade with well-drained soil. Evergreen in mild climates. Perennial Zones 6-9

Note: I experimented with planting several varieties of makinoi sedum in full shade in my woodland, under Grandma Maple, which almost never receives any light. Surprisingly, It lasted a few years, but never really thrived. I would recommend choosing a site with at least part day sun or filtered light for best performance.

Edibility: The fleshy leaves and tender young stems of Sedum makinoi are nutritious and edible, although too much can cause tummy upset. Stonecrop has a mild peppery astringent taste and can be added to soups, salads or stir-fry. It’s the young tender leaves that can be eaten raw. Older leaves may have more of an astringent taste and you may prefer cooking.
