Dierama hybrid Dark Violet (Fairy Fishing Wand, Angels Fishing Rod)

Dieramas form graceful 2-3 ft tall evergreen clumps of grass-like foliage. Late summer into fall is when the magic happens. Absolutely enchanting rich purple, bell shaped flowers dangle on the ends of arching stems up to 5-6 ft. It’s always a surprise when the flowers emerge, becoming a conversation piece in any garden. The flowers of this Dark Violet hybrid are larger and more dramatic than the species. Deer and rabbit resistant and drought tolerant. Yay! Hardy in zones 8-10

CARE: Well Drained Soil is a Must! The corms will rot in heavy soggy soil. They also like compost rich soil, so If you have clay try mounding and adding compost, sand and a bit of grit. Dieramas do best in full sun. They thrive on neglect and are pretty drought tolerant, but appreciate an occasional drink during long dry spells. They can thrive with regular water in a garden as long as the soil is sharply draining. Plant the corms about 3-4” below soil level. Try to site your Angel Fishing Rod where it will stay, as they resent being moved. Don’t prune back the evergreen foliage. If you need to clean it up after a hard winter just selectively snip off the yellowing leaves, leaving the healthy green ones.
