Campsis ‘Red Sunset’

Vivid red trumpet flowers summer into fall send hummers and garden visitors alike into a frenzy. Red Sunset trumpet vine is a vigorous easy to grow vine that can cover an unsightly fence or grace an arbor in no time. This woody vine has lush, glossy dark green foliage that beautifully sets off the red flowers. Drought tolerant and thrives on neglect. Plant where it can be controlled and cut back hard to keep it in bounds. In the upper zones it may be a bit too easy and aggressive. Blooms on new wood, so cutting back to about 1 ft in late winter is the best way to thwart world domination. Provide at least 6 hrs of sun for best flowering. 20-30’ tall. Zones 4-11

Notes: Campsis (Trumpet Vines) can be an indispensable garden addition or a nuisance depending on where and how it’s planted. A little forethought can go a long way. Spreads by suckering and that’s the #1 complaint. My recommendation is to plant it by an arbor or trellis in it’s own dedicated spot, where you can mow around it. You may consider bamboo fabric or a large 20 gal+ container. You may want to plant it at least 12’ from buildings or trees. Cut back hard in fall or late winter to control top growth.
