Phaseolus coccineus (Scarlet Runner Bean)

Lovely ornamental edible climber with fiery scarlet red flowers and colorful edible beans. Hummingbirds are crazy for the flowers which make a nice addition to a salad or to garnish your summer meals. They develop elongated pods. Wait till they are dry on the vine and harvest the large black beans with purple speckles to use as a cooked dry bean. The roots will resprout the following year in zones 7-11. You can leave the roots or harvest the large edible tuber to cook. Tastes like a combo of potato and taro. Fixes nitrogen. Perennial. Zones 7-9
