Macleaya cordata (Plume poppy)
Plume poppy is a vigorous perennial primarily grown for the architectural presence and bold foliage. Beautiful glaucus, deeply lobed metallic looking leaves with a brilliant silvery reverse. You’ll love the effect when the big leaves wave in the breeze revealing a brilliant silvery reverse. Mid-summer she has airy plumes of pinkish buds opening to white flowers that provide both pollen and nectar to the delight of bees and butterflies. Holds the prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society. A cautionary note: it can be a bully and spreads aggressively by underground . You may want to go around the edges with a spade once a year to squash it’s ambition for world dominance. Not fussy about soil. Poor soil will help curb the spread. Can be grown in sun or part shade. Zone 3-9 Despite the aggressive nature it really is a wonderful plant to design with. Try it in the back of a border to enjoy the late season flower plumes. Along a fence for privacy, or to create a wall of texture and color in a secret garden room where you can admire the bold foliage. Ht 6-8’ spreading
