Symphytum ‘Goldsmith’ Variegated Comfrey

Comfrey is one of the most useful herbs to grow and this beautiful variegated version deserves a prominent place in the garden. Textural leaves artfully painted… feature dark green and sage green with wide cream margins. Dainty blue flowers delight the bees all summer. Goldsmith is a low growing, front of the border comfrey 1’ in height. It spreads slowly outward to form lovely clumps. Compared to, ‘Axminster Gold’ Comfrey which has a taller, more upright, non-spreading habit. Drought and deer resistant. Happy in sun-part shade with well-drained soil and occasional water during dry spells. Would be a lovely addition to a formal garden, permaculture or food forest planted in a ring around a fruit tree. Comfrey has so many uses. It’s a dynamic nutrient accumulator with deep roots that pull nutrients up. Many use it as a chop and drop fertilizer to mulch around trees and berry bushes. It’s also a fabulous addition to a compost pile or a topical medicinal salve. Perennial. Zones 4-8
