Gaultheria procumbens ‘Peppermint Pearl’ PP27,170 ( Wintergreen)
This workhorse of a groundcover will enchant you with surprisingly huge white berries. The berries form in fall and often hold on till the plant pushes new growth in spring and add sparkle to a shady area. Peppermint Pearl is a glossy evergreen groundcover. Very cold hardy down to zone 4a! It has a compact size of 6″ high and 12″ wide, but slowly spreads to form a small groundcover. It prefers acid soil and partial shade. The berries are edible… natural breath mint anyone? Its berries have been used for ice-cream, candy, tea, jam, and aromatic oils. I occasionally float a few in my tea and eat them at the end. What do Peppermint Pearl Wintergreen Berries Taste Like? Why Wintergreen Bubblegum …. Of course. Not exactly something you want to sit and eat all day, but creative chefs could surely find a way to feature the unique berries. They make a fun nibble for kids.
