Asimina triloba Paw Paw Tree’ KSU Atwood‘

Exciting new variety developed by the KSU Paw Paw tree breeding program. KSU Atwood is an early ripening selection chosen for its very heavy crops (150 or more fruit per tree) very few seeds and rich delicious flavor. Paw Paw trees are incredibly hardy down to -10 F. They are the largest fruit native to North America and easy to grow. They are one of the few fruit trees that thrive in partly shady areas. The fruit tastes very tropical with hints of banana, mango and pineapple. Some describe it as a Boston cream pie in a fruit. The center is soft and it doesn’t ship well, which is why you rarely see it in the grocery store. Luckily you can easily grow Paw Paws in your home garden and enjoy the tropical tasting fruit right off the tree. The tree also has a tropical vibe with large elongated leaves that turn yellow in fall. At maturity, Paw Paw trees are about 15-30 ft. tall, 15 ft. wide. They grow in moist rich soil as understory tree making them a perfect choice to layer in a permaculture food forest. Pawpaws make a wonderful edible to anchor a butterfly garden. They are the exclusive larval host plant of zebra swallowtails (Eurytides marcellus). Zone 5-9
