Beesia deltophylla

Beesia is a useful and beautiful groundcover for sun or shade. I love the lush look of its glossy, evergreen heart-shaped leaves that form a weed smothering carpet. White airy flowers rise above the leathery, deep green foliage in spring. Each lustrously shiny leaf has silvery veining and perches on purple petioles (Leaf Stems) adding to the interest. There are precious few plants for deep shade and beesia is one of them. Collected in Sichuan province, China and Introduced to the USA in 1996 by famed plant explorer, Dan Hinkley. A wonderful plant partner to create that lush, soothing look we all desire in a woodland garden. Try combining beesia with hellebore, hosta, mahonia, pulmonaria and ferns for a lush fuss-free woodland garden. Beesia looks it’s best in moist well drained soil in part to deep shade. Spreads slowly to form a glossy understory, but isn’t invasive at all. Give her a drink during dry spells and you will be rewarded with a luminous shade garden. Evergreen, Zone 6-9 Ht 1 ft.
