Ceanothus griseus var. horizontalis ‘Diamond Heights’

Beautiful and useful evergreen groundcover for summer-dry gardens. Features glossy, oval lime to chartreuse green leaves with bold splashes of deep green. Frothy pale blue flowers emerge in spring and are lovely set against the interesting leaf palette. Only grows 1 ft tall and can spread to about 6 ft. Making it a very useful plant ally to help knit the garden together. May experience scorch in full sun. Looks particularly lovely shining and brightening partly shaded areas. As with all ceanothus provide good draining soil. No boggy places with standing water.

History: Barry Lehrman collected this unusual low growing selection of ceanothus as a sport off a caramel creeper from the Diamond Heights neighborhood on Mount Davidson, in San Francisco. That’s where the name came from, in case you were wondering.

Try using it to line a pathway, to weave among other plants, or to spill over a hillside. Beautiful evergreen for mixed containers. Hardy to about 20 F. More in a sheltered area under a canopy of trees.
