Tolmiea ‘Cool Gold’ (Piggyback Plant)

This fast growing, lush evergreen groundcover really brightens up a shady border or container. ‘Cool Gold ‘ Piggyback Plant is a West Coast native from Northern California to Alaska. While hiking, Ken Brown spotted an electric yellow version. Terra Nova Nursery calls it, ’Cool Gold’. What an exciting find .‘Cool Gold’ retains its bright gold color throughout the season without reversions, like some older cultivars. It’s lovingly called ,’Piggyback Plant’ or ‘Youth on Age’ as a reference to its charming growth habit. Baby plantlets grow on the tops of mature leaves; the youth literally piggy-backing off the mama plant. Where the babies drop, they root. Happiest in rich loamy soil with regular moisture. In those conditions it can be super vigorous, so site it well. Grows fine in dry shade, with some supplemental water. Makes a great houseplant too! Ht 1’ x 2-3’ wide. Perennial. Zones 6-9
