Holy Smoke this is an exciting selection of a US native! Big Bluestem grass once dominated the prairies across America.’ Holy Smoke’ Bluestem provides a dramatic focal point, texture, a kaleidoscope of everchanging color, vertical interest and movement. Greets spring with red stems holding glaucus-blue blades transitioning to green with a maroon dusting. As the weather cools you’ll enjoy spectacular red and smoky-purple foliage, interspersed with bronzy orange held on deep-pink stems. Deer and drought resistant. The extensive root system makes this an excellent choice for erosion control. Don’t forget to intersperse some native grasses in your landscape. Big Bluestem is the larval host for many species of butterflies (Delaware Skipper, Dusted Skipper, Ottoe, Beard-Grass skippers and Common Wood Nymph).
