Lindera Angustifolia

The ‘Asian Spicebush’ is an underused garden treasure rarely seen in North America with spectacular fall color over a very long season with a dazzling display of pink, yellow, orange and scarlet. Fall foliage eventually settles to a pinkish buff color which hangs on all winter till the small yellow flowers emerge the following spring. The winter leaves rustle in the wind creating their own music. Summer leaves are glossy green with silvery undersides. Makes a colorful screening plant to add interest and texture to the garden. This large multi-stemmed shrub can be allowed to branch into a dense shrub, or can be easily be turned into a small tree to expose the lovely grey bark. The leaves have a spicy fragrance when crushed and are unappealing to deer. Small black fruit in fall for the birds. The leaves have good substance and hold in excellent condition all winter—small branches would make good subjects for winter arrangements—till in April they all drop off over a 24-hour period. Full sun to part shade and acidic soil. Ht 6-12 ft Zone 5-8
