Sambucus racemose ‘ Lemony Lace’ Elderberry

Chartreause lacy foliage is luminous and really lights up a shady area. Large white lace-cap flowers emerge in Spring, to the delight of pollinators. Flowers are soon followed by coppery -red new foliage which transitions to a bright lemony yellow. More sun brings out brighter foliage, but it prefers shade from the scorching part of the day and looks it’s best in a lightly shady area. Looks like a large softly textural fern you’d find in Avatar! The glossy red berries are ornamental and fine for birds, but shouldn’t be eaten by us. For edible elderberries please refer to the black elderberries (Sambucus nigra). 5-10” tall and wide. Large leaves add contrast to the lacy foliage. Effective plant companions could include Rhodies, Rodgersia or a fatsia Japonica. Zone 3-8
