Ribes rubrum ‘Red Jade’ Currant

Red Jade is a vigorous disease resistant variety that produces beautiful clusters of large glossy ruby red berries that dangle on strands. Red currants are a stunning edible ornamental and a nutritional powerhouse loaded with vitamins and antioxidants. These ‘Superfruits’ are especially rich in Vit C ,K, Manganese and Potassium. Slightly tart flesh has complex hints of raspberry, rose, rhubarb, gooseberry and cranberry. The berries make awesome jams, juice, cordials, sauces and compliment savory meals as a marinade, or simply plop in fresh berries into a salad. You can even mash them up as a face-mask for radiant skin. They bear fruit on old wood, therefore require very little to no pruning. Mature yield 10-20lbs. Self-fertile.

Wonderful as part of a food forest and ornamental enough to tuck into a mixed perennial border. They have interesting foliage and are beautiful in bloom and berry. They prefer morning sun and afternoon shade or dappled part sun in loamy soil with some supplemental water during dry spells. Deer resistant. Ht 3’-5’ Very cold hardy in zones 3-8
