Rheum palmatum var Tanguticum
Swoon worthy! This big bold perennial is sure to turn heads! A candidate for a Jurassic Garden. Ginormous divided leaves with a burgundy blush and red undersides, provide the perfect framework for the airy panicles of 5’ maroon flowers in July. Moist rich soil in light shade keeps it looking good. The clump can reach 4-6’ wide, so allow some space. Deciduous. Zone 5-9
Note: Contains considerable amounts of oxalic acid and should never be consumed without cooking. This species has many traditional medicinal and edible uses, but is different than culinary garden rhubarb. It has an acidic taste and cooked stems can be used in place of fruit.
