Darmera peltata

Hardy showstopping perennial for a moist shady spot, featuring humongous leaves with bold presence. Can handle boggy conditions and looks amazing stabilizing streamside slopes. Can also be grown successfully in a shady garden, large container, or in sun with consistent water. I sprinkle ‘Water Crystals’ to hold the water in the planting holes and replenish every few years. The leaves die back in winter after blushing red for fall. Early spring, unusual flower-stalks rise before the foliage and open to round pink and white flowers resembling a big Bergenia. The flowers can reach 3’ and have a lollipop Dr. Seuss vibe. The leaves open like little parasols. Super sweet and interesting. You can bet the forest fairies are having a party there each night when you aren’t looking. Native to Oregon and California. Edible. Leafstalk can be peeled and eaten raw, cooked like asparagus or added to soups and stews. 3-5’ tall and wide and slowly spreading. Give her some room. Zone 6-10
