Astelia nervosa ‘Westland’ ( Red Mountain Astelia)
This New Zealander has proven itself to be exceptionally hardy here in the PNW. The strappy evergreen foliage with burgundy stripes, a red tint and a silver overlay sparkles in the woodland. Part shade. Makes a great foil for ferns and bold hostas. Evergreen and semi-drought tolerant, but appreciates and grows more vigorously with some moisture in our dry summers. Insignificant white flowers sometimes turn into cute ornamental red fruit. Loamy soil is ideal. 2’ wide and spreads (slowly) to offer little evergreen patches. Perennial hardy down to zone 8a. Protect pots below 10F.
