Callirhoe involucrate (Purple Poppy Mallow) (Wine-cups)
Enjoy a summer long display of poppy-like deep magenta flowers. As a native wildflower, wine-cups has a long taproot making it very adaptable to drought and adverse conditions. Prefers a sunny spot and needs good drainage. May go dormant in extreme heat and drought, but will reemerge after a rain. Forms a low trailing mat covered in flowers and looks magical intertwined with other perennials and grasses or draping off a wall. Larval host for several butterfly species, including the Gray Hairstreak Butterfly. Perennial. Ht 5” and sprawling 2-3’. Feel free to snip back stems if it gets too sprawly. Zones 5-9.
